BANGKOK, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's ruling Bhumjaithai Party announced late Wednesday its resolution to nominate two candidates for the premiership in the upcoming election, including party leader and Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
In a statement, the party cited Anutin's extensive experience in national administration and the need for continuity in handling various threats currently facing the country.
Sihasak was selected based on his diplomatic experience as vital for restoring Thailand's dignity on the global stage, the party said, emphasizing his ability to work cohesively with political and security sectors.
The statement also addressed the roles of Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun and Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, who had previously been speculated as potential prime ministerial candidates, saying both have agreed to continue working with the party to form a potential government.
The clarification comes as the party launched its election campaign in the day, initially naming Anutin as its sole prime ministerial candidate.
Thailand is set for a general election on Feb. 8 to select the 500 members of the House of Representatives, following the dissolution of parliament announced earlier this month. ■
