KABUL, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture has decided to digitize historical artifacts at a museum in the country's eastern region, the state-owned newspaper The Kabul Times Daily reported Thursday.

Citing a statement from the ministry, the newspaper said a 3D digitization program for the artifacts began earlier this week at the Eastern Zone Museum in Nangarhar province, under the provincial information and culture authority.

The museum currently houses more than 1,420 historical artifacts from different periods, the report added.

The digitization initiative aims to ensure better preservation of the artifacts, facilitate exhibitions, support academic research, and transfer cultural heritage to future generations, the paper said.

The Afghan government is committed to protecting Afghanistan's historical heritage and has vowed to spare no effort to preserve ancient artifacts in the post-war country, the official newspaper concluded.
