COLOMBO, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka Police will roll out an island-wide security and traffic management operation during the Christmas and New Year period in order to ensure public safety amid increased travel and large public gatherings, the country's Police Headquarters said.
Police headquarters said the measures will be in force throughout Christmas Eve and extend into the early hours of the New Year in 2026. The Inspector General of Police has instructed senior police officers at both provincial and local levels to implement a coordinated security framework alongside a structured traffic control plan during the festive period.
The police said the arrangements are aimed at supporting the safe movement of people into and within major urban centers, where higher volumes of travel are expected for religious observances, shopping, and seasonal events.
Tourist-frequented areas such as hotels, shopping malls, and other popular destinations will also be monitored closely to ensure safety throughout the holiday period, police said. ■
