KABUL, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Police have rounded up 241 drug addicts from different districts of the Afghan capital, Kabul, and sent them to a rehabilitation center for treatment, the country's Ministry of Interior Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.
"Personnel of the Counter-Narcotics Police, in several separate operations across different areas of Kabul city, detained 241 drug addicts and referred them to a treatment center for medical care and rehabilitation," the statement posted on the ministry's social media platform "X" said.
Without providing more details, the statement noted that police would spare no effort in combating illicit drugs and drug addiction until the country is free of the drug menace.
Afghanistan, once a major poppy-growing country, reportedly has more than 3 million drug addicts. The Afghan government has been fighting to rid the country of the drug menace since taking over power in August 2021. ■
