WELLINGTON, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's gross domestic product (GDP) surged 1.1 percent in the September 2025 quarter, Stats NZ reported Thursday.

This followed a 1 percent decrease in the June 2025 quarter, said the statistics department.

"GDP rose in three of the last four quarters, but fell 0.5 percent over the year ended September 2025 compared with the year ended September 2024," said Stats NZ economic growth spokesperson Jason Attewell.

The 1.1-percent growth was broad-based across 14 of 16 industries, led by business services up 1.6 percent, fueled by professional, scientific and technical services, such as computer system design and related services, the department said.

Manufacturing climbed 2.2 percent in the September 2025 quarter, after a 3.9 percent fall in the June 2025 quarter, when it was the main driver of the 1 percent decrease in GDP, Attewell said.

Information media and telecommunications fell 2.1 percent, the largest downward contributor to GDP in the latest quarter, statistics showed.

GDP per capita rose 0.9 percent, and the expenditure measure of GDP increased 1.3 percent during the September 2025 quarter, boosted by 3.3 percent export growth in travel services, dairy and insurance, plus 3.2 percent in gross fixed capital formation for transport equipment and machinery, Stats NZ said.

Household consumption rose 0.1 percent, with durables like vehicles and electronics up 2 percent, it said.
