COLOMBO, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's economy grew by 5.4 percent in the third quarter of 2025, the Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) said in a statement on Monday.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the third quarter of 2025, at 2015 constant prices, increased to 3,325,611 million rupees (about 11 billion U.S. dollars) from 3,154,148 million rupees (about 10.5 billion dollars) from the third quarter of 2024.

A key driver of the economic growth was the expansion of domestic credit, mainly through cooperatives and the private sector, DCS said. This was reflected in the strong growth of financial activities during the quarter.

Increased tourist arrivals, along with a higher supply of investment goods and lower-cost imports of intermediate goods, supported growth in manufacturing, construction, and especially services, including accommodation and passenger and freight transport, DCS said.

Primary economic activities such as agriculture and mining also contributed significantly to growth, reinforced by expansions in electricity, water supply, and most service-sector activities in the third quarter of 2025, DCS said.
