KABUL, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- A total of 60 drug addicts have returned to their families after completing rehabilitation in western Afghanistan's Ghor province, the official media outlet Radio and Television of Afghanistan (RTA) reported on Saturday.

The former addicts were collected from across the province a few months ago and underwent treatment at a rehabilitation center, RTA said, adding that all of them were recently sent home to reintegrate into society.

Afghanistan, once a major poppy producer, is reported to have more than 3 million drug addicts. However, the Afghan government has been fighting to combat the drug problem since taking over power in August 2021.

As part of the efforts, the administration has banned poppy cultivation, drug production and trafficking, while also collecting addicts and sending them to rehabilitation centers.

According to officials, thousands have completed treatment and returned to their families over the past four years. In Herat province alone, a total of 35,000 drug users have completed rehabilitation programs and reintegrated into their families.
