KABUL, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A total of 228 Afghan nationals, who had been imprisoned in Pakistan and Iraq, have been released and returned to Afghanistan this week, the statement of the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said on Friday.

According to the statement, among the released, 224 individuals who had been detained in Pakistani prisons for up to two months were repatriated through the Spin Boldak border crossing in southern Kandahar province. Additionally, four Afghan nationals, who had been imprisoned in Iraq for three months, returned home via the Pul-e-Abresham border point in western Nimroz province.

The latest figures from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, published in July, reveal that over 10,000 Afghan citizens are still incarcerated abroad, with the majority of them held in Iran and Pakistan.
