SYDNEY, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- One man has died and another has been hospitalized with serious injuries after a wall collapsed at a construction site in the Australian city of Brisbane on Tuesday morning.
Police in the state of Queensland said that emergency services were called to reports that two workers were trapped at an industrial site in Brisbane's West End around 8:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
A 45-year-old man was declared deceased at the scene and a 19-year-old man was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Inspector Chris Pemberton from the Queensland Police Service (QPS) told reporters at the scene that the 19-year-old was trapped for over an hour before being freed.
He said that the fellow workers likely saved the 19-year-old's life by helping police officers remove a large amount of concrete from his chest.
A local resident told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that occupants of neighboring properties were evacuated due to concerns over possible further structural collapses.
The QPS said that the incident would be investigated by workplace health and safety regulators. ■
