COLOMBO, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Wholesale prices of vegetables at Sri Lanka's Dambulla Dedicated Economic Center have risen sharply on Monday following recent adverse weather in the country.
The official wholesale price list displayed at the center for Dec. 1 at 8:00 a.m. local time showed a wide range of elevated prices across key vegetables.
One kg of carrots is now being sold between 700 rupees (about 2.27 U.S. dollars) and 1,000 rupees at the wholesale market. Beans and leeks are quoted at 500 to 800 rupees per kg, marking a steep increase compared with normal trading levels at the country's main wholesale hub for up-country produce.
For other vegetables, cabbage is marked at 100 to 180 rupees per kg and cauliflower at 350 to 400 rupees, both notably elevated from before.
Traders at the center attributed the price hikes to the large-scale destruction of vegetable plots caused by recent heavy rains and landslides. ■
