TOKYO, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- A woman in her 40s was stabbed by a man in central Tokyo's busy Akasaka district on Sunday and sustained serious injuries, local media reported.

At around 10:25 a.m. local time, police received an emergency call saying that a woman was bleeding after having been stabbed by a man wearing black headwear on the basement floor of a building in Akasaka, Kyodo News reported, citing police sources.

The woman sustained serious injuries to her abdomen and hand but was conscious when taken to a hospital, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said, adding that the suspected attacker fled the scene with a knife-like weapon.

The victim, thought to be a singer, was believed to have been attacked while she was waiting alone outside a live music club where she was scheduled to perform, the report said.

The police said they were searching for the suspect, adding that the woman did not know him.
