COLOMBO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land, and Irrigation said that this year's green gram harvest in the country has exceeded initial expectations.
"While farmers had anticipated about 250-300 kg per acre, the actual yield reached 350-400 kg per acre. In the Hambantota district alone, the green gram harvest is estimated at 6,500-7,000 metric tons," Daily News stated, quoting the ministry.
The ministry also noted the significant contribution of women in the harvesting process.
On procurement measures, the ministry said efforts are underway to strengthen collection and reduce imports.
As one step, the National Food Promotion Board purchased 15 metric tons of green gram on Tuesday in the Weerawila and Lunama areas, the statement said. ■
