PHNOM PENH, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia and South Korea on Monday vowed to boost cooperation and fight against online scams, said a news release from the Cambodian side.
The commitment was made during a meeting in Phnom Penh between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and visiting South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, said the news release from the Cambodian prime minister's spokesperson unit.
The prime minister emphasized that the safety and well-being of South Korean citizens, who have been living and working in Cambodia, are also a high priority of the royal government of Cambodia, the news release said.
Both sides also discussed ways to further broaden cooperation in key areas of the economy, investment, trade, national defense and security, industry, and the establishment of special economic zones for South Korean enterprises, people-to-people exchanges, and tourism, the news release said.
On the same day, Cambodian senior minister Chhay Sinarith, chief of the Secretariat of the Commission for Combating Online Scams, met with visiting South Korean National Police Agency's acting Commissioner General Yoo Jae-seong to deliberate fight against online scams.
Sinarith told Yoo that the Cambodian government is committed to combating cybercrime, stressing the importance of expanding probes to identify masterminds and syndicates behind online scam operations, including their financial systems, said a news release from the Commission for Combating Online Scams.
Sinarith also supported the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a joint task force to eradicate online scams, abduction, detention and other crimes targeting South Korean nationals in the Southeast Asian country, the news release added.
Last month, Cambodia deported 64 South Korean online scam suspects, including five women, to their birth country. ■
