SYDNEY, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- A man has died after the truck in which he was traveling collided with a railway bridge northwest of Sydney on Thursday, causing it to collapse.
Police in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) said that the truck hit the bridge in the town of Lithgow, 110 km northwest of Sydney, shortly before 9 a.m. local time.
The driver of the truck, a 38-year-old man, managed to free himself after the bridge collapsed on top of the truck, but a 34-year-old male passenger was trapped and was found dead on Thursday afternoon following a major rescue operation.
NSW Police said that both men were employed by Sydney Trains. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the incident involved a disused railway bridge.
Superintendent John Walke told reporters that it was a dangerous situation for emergency responders.
A recovery operation to remove the truck from under the bridge remained ongoing on Thursday evening and police commenced an investigation into the incident. ■
