CANBERRA, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Almost half of Australians believe that the U.S. is an unreliable security ally under President Donald Trump and that Australia would be better served by a more independent approach to foreign policy, according to a new poll.

The poll, which was conducted by YouGov on behalf of Canberra-based think tank The Australia Institute, found that 48 percent of respondents believe the U.S. is a somewhat or very unreliable security ally under Trump's Presidency.

By comparison, 43 percent of respondents said that the U.S. is a very or somewhat reliable ally.

Half of the respondents to the poll said they believe that Trump's election for a second term as president has been either bad or very bad for Australia, the U.S. and the world compared to 23 percent who said it has been good or very good.

On foreign policy, 46 percent said that Australia's interests would be better served by a more independent foreign policy, while 32 percent said a closer alliance with the U.S. would be more beneficial.

More than 50 percent of respondents said they would feel very or mostly unsafe traveling to the U.S. currently.
