NEW DELHI, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and more than a dozen injured when a passenger train collided with a stationary goods train in India's central state of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, confirmed an Indian Railways spokesman.

The accident occurred in the state's Bilaspur district around 4 p.m. when the passenger train overshot the signal and rammed into the stationary goods train near Lal Khadan area.

The collision was so strong that some coaches climbed over each other, local media reported, adding that the injured persons had been admitted to a local hospital.

According to an online report by India Today, the accident's impact derailed multiple coaches and damaged overhead wires and signaling systems, thus halting train operations on the route.

The rescue and relief operation was underway, with several trains cancelled or diverted, the report added.

Calling the train accident "extremely heartbreaking," Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai posted on X that "instructions have been issued to provide them with all possible assistance and relief efforts."
