COLOMBO, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's main commercial port, the Colombo Port, recorded a net profit of 32.2 billion rupees (about 107 million U.S. dollars) after tax in the first eight months of 2025, a 71 percent growth compared to the same period in 2024, the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation announced on Thursday.
According to the ministry, this financial performance reflects the impact of ongoing development projects, improved operational efficiency, a 6 percent rise in container handling compared to the first eight months of 2024, and the completion of major infrastructure projects.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) attributed the profit surge to the renewal of terminal service agreements, expanded capacity, and effective cost management.
The SLPA said the profits will be used to implement strategic plans aimed at positioning the Colombo Port as a leading regional transshipment hub.
The Colombo Port handled a record 7.78 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container throughput in 2024, according to official data. ■
