ULAN BATOR, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- A steppe fire has devastated at least 2,000 hectares of land in the eastern Mongolian province of Dornod according to the National Emergency Management Agency on Friday.

The fire, which erupted in Khalkhgol Soum (administrative subdivision), was fully extinguished by Friday morning, the agency said.

According to experts, main causes of natural fires are careless handling of fire by citizens, as well as deliberate burning of grass and debris.

The agency has warned residents of Ulan Bator and 21 Mongolian provinces not to make bonfires or throw cigarette butts on the ground in dry weather.

The total number of forest and steppe fires across Mongolia at the end of August 2025 reached 216.
