BAKU, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Azerbaijan has launched the construction of large battery energy storage systems to boost the growth of renewable energy, the state energy company AzerEnerji said on Thursday.
The systems are the largest in the Commonwealth of Independent States, of which Azerbaijan is a member, and are being installed at the 500-kilovolt Absheron substation near Baku and the 220-kilovolt Agdash substation in central Azerbaijan. Together, they will provide 250 megawatts of capacity and 500 megawatt-hours of storage, AzerEnerji said.
The project is designed to stabilize the grid, reduce interruptions to renewable power, balance peak demand, and restore the system in the event of outages.
The initiative is part of a broader program to integrate 2 gigawatts of new solar and wind power plants into the national grid by 2027, according to the company. ■
