KABUL, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Three children sustained injuries as an unexploded ordnance, which was left over from the past wars, went off in western Afghanistan's Badghis province on Tuesday, Provincial Police Spokesman Sediqullah Sediqi said Wednesday.

The incident occurred in Qaroto village of Balamurghab district on Tuesday afternoon after the children found a toy-like device and threw it in a fire while playing, but the device exploded badly injuring the kids, the official added.

This is the second incident of its kind since Saturday. In a previous similar incident, which took place in the eastern Wardak province on Saturday, a teenage boy lost his life, and four others were injured.

The war-torn Afghanistan reportedly is one of the mine-contaminated countries in the world, as the unexploded devices left over from the past more than four decades of war often kill or maim people, mostly children, every month in the country.
