KABUL, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Police have arrested 32 drug smugglers from different provinces of Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, the country's Ministry of Interior Affairs said Wednesday.

The alleged drug smugglers have been detained from Herat, Khost, Kunduz, Wardak, Balkh, Helmand, and Farah provinces on charges of trafficking and selling illegal drugs, the ministry said in a statement posted on its X account.

Police had recovered a quantity of illegal drugs, including 9 kg of opium poppy and 1 kg of methamphetamine from the possessions of the arrested persons, the statement asserted.

In the drive against illicit drugs, police set on fire more than 7 tons of opium poppy in the northern Takhar province on Monday.
