JAKARTA, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's National Anti-Narcotics Agency (BNN) was intensifying its efforts to combat drug abuse through stronger enforcement and community empowerment, BNN head Marthinus Hukom said on Wednesday.
Hukom said that drug misuse is not merely a public health issue, but also poses a serious threat to national security, adding that the number of people illegally consuming narcotics in Indonesia has reached a staggering 3.3 million.
Hukom warned that drug distribution was no longer confined to urban areas. "Rural communities are increasingly being targeted as well," he said. ■
