JAKARTA, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian city of Jakarta will add around 200 new electric buses to further support public mobility by the end of this year, a city official said Friday.

The city's Transportation Agency head, Syafrin Liputo, said that the addition of new buses was prompted by the increasing number of passengers and the need to expand the service area.

"This year we will have an addition of approximately 200 electric buses that will be operated to strengthen Transjakarta services," he said, referring to the city-owned bus operator.

The bus operator is currently using some electric buses from Chinese manufacturers such as Zhongtong, Skywell, and Golden Dragon as part of a push to electrify its fleet.

The expansion is part of the Jakarta provincial government's broader efforts to improve and extend public transportation.
