ALMATY, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations (UN) Green Climate Fund (GCF) will allocate 280 million U.S. dollars to support environmental projects in Kazakhstan, Kazinform news agency reported on Tuesday.
Kazakhstan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Yerlan Nyssanbayev said the funding will be used to develop renewable energy sources, promote low-carbon technologies in the industrial sector, and support the adoption of electric vehicles.
Nyssanbayev noted that a country program for the UN GCF was prepared in 2024 to advance green initiatives. The program includes seven projects focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector, strengthening centralized water supply systems in rural areas, modernizing livestock farms, and promoting private-sector participation in green finance.
The total budget of these projects exceeds 1 billion U.S. dollars, with 630 million U.S. dollars expected to be financed by the GCF.
In addition, under the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) renewable energy program, support is planned for the construction of up to 11 renewable energy facilities in Kazakhstan with a total capacity of 330 megawatts. To date, nine subprojects have been financed. The project implementation period spans from 2017 to 2027. ■
