TOKYO, May 27 (Xinhua) -- An explosion occurred at a construction site in Tokyo's Edogawa Ward on Tuesday morning, injuring eight people, local media reported.
According to the Tokyo Fire Department, a report of an explosion sound was received around 9:30 a.m. local time. Black smoke was seen rising from a construction vehicle at the site, which was engulfed in flames, national broadcaster NHK reported.
A total of eight people, including construction workers and nearby residents, were injured. None of the injuries is life-threatening, according to the report.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said construction work was underway to drive foundation piles for a new condominium building at the site, and there is a possibility that a gas pipe was damaged during the process.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause and details of the incident. ■
