JAKARTA, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has announced the discovery of a new orchid species in a forest on Kalimantan Island.

Krisdianto, head of the bureau of public relations and foreign cooperation at the ministry, said in a statement on Wednesday that the species was found during a biodiversity expedition conducted by the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park Service.

According to him, the orchid was discovered on Mount Bukit Raya at an altitude of 1,320 meters.

Krisdianto revealed that the newly identified orchid has been given the Latin name Bulbophyllum bukitrayaense.

With this discovery, he emphasized the high potential for uncovering additional new species on Kalimantan Island.

"This discovery is proof that the tropical rainforest ecosystem in Kalimantan still holds extraordinary biodiversity potential and needs to be maintained and researched more deeply for the sake of preserving nature and the nation's biological heritage," he said.
