VIENTIANE, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The National Assembly of Laos has held a consultation meeting to discuss the implementation of laws and legal frameworks addressing urgent socio-cultural issues in the country.
The meeting was chaired last Friday by Vice President of the National Assembly of Laos Khambai Damlat, with participation from Lao officials and other key stakeholders, Lao News Agency reported on Monday.
In his speech, Khambai stressed the need for stronger implementation of existing laws, particularly those addressing rising concerns such as the use of e-cigarettes and other addictive substances. Despite current regulations, enforcement remains weak, especially in areas such as import control, distribution, and public awareness.
At the meeting, participants raised several pressing concerns, including the ineffective regulation of online media, particularly in managing inappropriate content, fake news, and societal harm. They also highlighted inadequate cooperation with service providers and the lack of effective public awareness campaigns.
Other issues included weak enforcement of regulations in entertainment venues, where penalties for violations remain insufficient, and the persistence of traffic accidents despite existing laws and safety measures. Additionally, the rise in HIV infections among certain population groups continues, despite ongoing prevention efforts.
These issues have negatively impacted public health, social stability, law and order, and human resource development.
The meeting also called for urgent reforms to strengthen law enforcement and improve social governance. ■
