TOKYO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks rose on Monday as investor optimism surrounding progress in China-U.S. tariff talks prompted buying in stock index futures.

The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, closed at 37,644.26, up 140.93 points, or 0.38 percent from the previous trading day.

Anticipation that trade tensions between the two nations might ease drove gains in major semiconductor stocks like Advantest and Tokyo Electron. At one point, the Nikkei rose more than 200 points.

However, as the details of the talks were expected to be announced later in the day, upward momentum was limited.

The broader Topix Index also extended its winning streak, closing up 8.59 points, or 0.31 percent, at 2,742.08, marking its highest level since March 28.

Among listed issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, 1,116 advanced, 476 declined, and 42 remained unchanged.
