KABUL, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Border Police Force has foiled attempts to smuggle cash and illegal drugs worth more than 5 million U.S. dollars over the past three years, spokesman for the Border Police Force Abidullah Farooqi said Monday.

In a drive against smuggling and smugglers, the border police have thwarted attempts to smuggle 5 million U.S. dollars in cash, more than half a million dirham of the United Arab Emirates, 22 kg of gold, 738 kg of precious and semi-precious stones, and 598 kg of illicit drug over the past three years, the official said.

The smugglers were attempting to take the goods illegally outside the country via airports and border crossing points, the official said.

Dozens of individuals have been arrested and referred to the judiciary for further investigation over the period, the official said, adding that the police would do their best to check smuggling elsewhere in the country.
