BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Brunei has recorded significant achievements in the medical field, with 128 local medical specialists currently working at local hospitals, a government minister has said.
The medical specialists are working in general, dental, pediatric, and emergency units, Haji Md Isham Jaafar, Brunei's minister of health, said at the legislative council on Monday.
The new achievements were a sharp contrast to the figure of only 30 medical specialists 15 years ago, an increase of more than 400 percent, the minister noted.
The minister said that, besides working as specialists at the hospital, the medical staff are also involved in teaching at local institutions' in-house training programs.
Kidney, heart, and liver transplants conducted at the local hospital, involving both foreign and local specialists, facilitated the transfer of skills.
Brunei marked a significant step forward in the healthcare sector with its first-ever successful liver transplant from a living donor in February 2025 at Jerudong Park Medical Center near the capital. ■
