Car sales drop by 20 pct in India

NEW DELHI, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Passenger car sales in India saw a significant decline in the second quarter of the current financial year (April 2024-March 2025) compared to the same period last year, showed the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on Monday.

According to the data, car sales in the July-September quarter fell by around 20 percent compared to the same period of the last financial year. A total of 318,805 passenger cars were sold during this period, compared to 396,498 units in the same quarter last year, added the SIAM data.

It further stated that the sales of goods carrier vehicles witnessed a decline of 15.8 percent during the same period. In the second quarter of this year, 69,514 such vehicles were sold, down from 82,538 units in the same period last year.

Light commercial vehicles' sales, too, saw a dip of 10.2 percent. Between July and September, 1,26,370 light commercial vehicles were sold, compared to 1,53,927 units in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, contrary to the decline in sales of passenger cars and commercial four-wheelers, the two-wheelers' sales showed a more positive trend. Scooters' sales recorded a growth of 16.9 percent in the second quarter, as 1.83 million units sold compared to 1.56 million units in the same period last year.
