KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities have inaugurated a water dam in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, said a local official on Monday.
Built at 105,000 U.S. dollars in the past three months, the dam would irrigate 220 hectares of land, Abdul Salam Baryali, provincial director for economy declared.
Last week. a newly constructed dam in southern Afghanistan's Zabul province was inaugurated and the construction work of a water reservoir began in southern Uruzgan province.
Drought is considered a crucial challenge in the landlocked country. The Afghan caretaker government has been building water dams across the country to improve water supply. ■
