HANOI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's capital Hanoi reported the first death of streptococcus suis so far this year, a bacterium that comes from pigs, local media reported Tuesday.
An 86-year-old woman in Quoc Oai district reportedly died of the infection.
She was sent for a health check-up at 103 Military Hospital on Monday after having high fever, headache and feeling drowsy.
The source of infection has not been identified. Since early this year, the city reported seven human cases of streptococcus suis including one death.
According to Hanoi Center for Disease Control, most of the human cases were infected after the patients slaughtered pigs, ate blood jelly or uncooked pork. ■
