Sri Lankan women win 1st Women's T20 Asia Cup title

COLOMBO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka women's cricket team won their first-ever Women's T20 Asia Cup title on Sunday beating seven-time champions India by 8 wickets.

The match was held in Dambulla in central Sri Lanka. T20 is a cricket format where each team gets to play 20 overs.

Batting first, India set a target of 165, the highest first-inning total in the tournament. India's Smriti Mandhana scored 60.

Chasing the total, Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu scored 61 runs and her compatriot Harshitha Samarawickrama scored 69 runs. Sri Lanka's women team has won 14 of the 17 T20Is in 2024.

The women's T20 World Cup is slated to be played in October this year.
