NEW DELHI, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Three members of a family were killed while five others rescued after a three-storey building collapsed amid heavy rains in the western Indian state of Gujarat, officials said Wednesday.

The building collapsed Tuesday evening in Jam Khambhalia town of Devbhumi Dwaraka district, about 388 km west of Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat.

Following the building collapse, authorities rushed police and fire brigade teams to the spot to carry out rescue efforts. A team from India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also dispatched to the spot to assist in the rescue operation.

"Three bodies (later identified as a woman and her two granddaughters) have been pulled out from the debris of the collapsed house after a prolonged rescue operation that continued until midnight," Bipin Kumar, an NDRF official, told media. "Five people were also rescued from the building."
