VIENTIANE, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Laos saw a decline in dengue fever cases in the first six months of 2024, compared to the corresponding period of 2023.

From January to June 2024, Laos recorded 5,192 cases of dengue fever and the virus has caused three deaths.

The highest number of cases occurred in Sekong province, where 1,534 cases were reported, while 1,288 cases were recorded in Lao capital Vientiane, and 585 cases in Luang Prabang province, according to a report from the Center of Information and Education for Health under the Lao Ministry of Health on Friday.

Meanwhile, 7,197 cases and one death were reported in Laos during the same period last year.

The number of cases had declined because of government efforts to suppress the spread of the virus and greater public awareness about ways to prevent mosquito bites.

The Lao Ministry of Health has vowed to continue improving the capacity of doctors and nurses to improve healthcare services in the crucial battle against the disease.
