NEW DELHI, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Five members of a family on a picnic were drowned after being swept away at a waterfall in India's western state of Maharashtra, police said Monday.

While four bodies were fished out, the search for the fifth one was underway.

The members drowned late Sunday afternoon in a waterfall behind the Bhushi Dam in Lonavala of Pune district, about 88 km southeast of Mumbai, the capital city of Maharashtra.

Authorities have pressed in divers from the police and Navy to carry out searches in the water.

"It's a tragic incident. Despite numerous warnings, people continue to venture into hazardous areas in the hilly terrain upstream of Bhushi Dam," a police official was quoted in local media as having said. Enditem.
