JAKARTA, June 13 (Xinhua) -- A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's North Sulawesi province early Thursday, but did not generate large waves, according to the country's meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency.
Initially, the agency reported the quake's magnitude as 6.0 before downgrading it.
The tremor occurred at 00:01 a.m. Jakarta time on Thursday (1701 GMT on Wednesday), with the epicenter 41 km northwest of the Talaud Islands regency at a depth of 32 km beneath the seabed.
The quake's intensity registered between III and IV MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in the Talaud Islands, III MMI in the Sangihe Islands regency, and II MMI in Manado, the provincial capital.
No tsunami warning was issued as the earthquake was not expected to cause large waves.
Indonesia, an island nation, is located on the seismically active "Pacific Ring of Fire." ■
