SYDNEY, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Australian police reported that a man has been shot on Tuesday during a home invasion in Sydney's southwest.

As per New South Wales Police Force, at about 12:45 a.m. local time, emergency services responded to reports of a man being shot inside a house on Mary Wade Place in Carnes Hill.

A 25-year-old man was found sustaining a gunshot wound to his right leg. Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Officers were told that eight men wearing face coverings forced entry into the premises, while they were confronted by the 25-year-old resident before he was shot twice.

Petrol was then poured through the home, but not ignited, before the men fled the scene in two separate vehicles.

Shotgun damage was also identified on a vehicle parked in the driveway of the home.

"A crime scene has been established as investigations commence. The incident is believed to be targeted," said the police.

Located about 35 km southwest of Sydney's central business district, the suburb of Carnes Hill has an estimated population of over 3,300.
