ISLAMABAD, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan is committed to the global efforts for preservation and sustainable use of oceans as well as protecting marine ecosystems in the South Asian country and beyond, said Romina Khurshid Alam, coordinator to the Pakistani prime minister on climate change and environmental coordination.

"Oceans globally are facing grave challenges, including pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction and the impacts of climate change. Besides, growing amounts of plastic being dumped in oceans is a major environmental threat to oceans' sustainability," the official said in a message on the occasion of World Oceans Day, being observed on Saturday.

Alam urged countries to strengthen cooperation, implement effective policies, and adopt sustainable practices to ensure the health and resilience of marine ecosystems for present and future generations.

As a coastal nation, she said Pakistan is committed to playing its part in advancing marine conservation efforts, adding that as a country with a rich maritime heritage, Pakistan recognizes the vital role that oceans play in supporting life on Earth, regulating climate, and providing resources that sustain livelihoods.

Alam said that Pakistan has been striving to safeguard oceans, and several initiatives such as marine protected areas, community-based conservation projects, national mangrove restoration initiative, and public awareness campaigns have been launched recently.

"The government is aware of the national and global environmental and climate change-related challenges facing the oceans, and efforts are being made to address marine pollution, promote sustainable fisheries management, and conserve marine biodiversity," she added.
