KABUL, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The construction of a power plant has begun in northern Afghanistan's Jawzjan province, the country's power electricity company said Thursday.
The construction work, costing more than 5.5 million U.S. dollars, is expected to be completed within one year, Hekmatullah Maiwandi, a spokesman for the company, posted on the social media X.
Without providing details about the plant's power capacity, the official added that the plant is expected to supply electricity to residents of five districts in the province.
Landlocked Afghanistan, aiming to overcome its power shortage, has been importing electricity from Tajikistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. ■
