JAKARTA, April 9 (Xinhua) -- A powerful earthquake of 6.5 magnitude jolted off Indonesia's eastern North Maluku province on Tuesday, no tsunami warning was triggered, the country's meteorology agency said.

The undersea earthquake occurred at 16:48 p.m. Jakarta time (0948 GMT). Its epicenter was at 87 km northwest of North Halmahera regency with a depth of 10 km, the agency said.

The tremors were felt at IV MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) in Marotai Island regency, and III to IV MMI in West Halmahera regency and Sofifi town, the agency reported.

Although the tremors were felt strongly in most of the province, nevertheless no damages or casualties were reported currently, Fehbi Alting, head of the provincial meteorology agency told Xinhua.

Indonesia sits on a vulnerable quake-hit zone, called the "Pacific Ring of Fire," making the archipelagic nation prone to earthquakes.
