TOKYO, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Two people died after a head-on collision between a compact car and a passenger vehicle on Monday in the northern Japanese prefecture of Yamagata, according to local police.
At around 2:20 p.m. local time, an emergency call reported the accident on the country's National Route 348 in the town of Shirataka, according to the prefectural police, noting that the incident occurred on a gently curved section of the road with one lane in each direction.
With both vehicles involved, the crash injured a total of four individuals who were transported to the hospital.
A man and a woman in their 70s and 90s respectively, who were in the compact car, the smallest category of Japanese expressway-legal motor vehicles, were later confirmed dead.
Another woman in her 60s, also traveling in the small vehicle, and a woman in her 40s from the passenger car remained conscious.
The prefectural police are currently investigating the details of the crash. ■
