ISLAMABAD, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistani law enforcement agencies have successfully repulsed a terrorist attack on a government building in the country's southwest Gwadar district of Balochistan province on Wednesday, killing eight armed terrorists, officials said.
A group of terrorists, armed with grenades and automatic rifles, attempted to storm the Gwadar Port Authority office building, which houses several crucial offices as well as facilities for law enforcers and staff residences, Gwadar Senior Superintendent of Police Zohaib Mohsin told Xinhua.
The security forces and police intercepted the attackers and killed all of them after a fierce exchange of fire, the official said, adding that a clearance operation is underway and the situation is completely under control.
Following the attack, a large contingent of police and security forces reached the scene and cordoned off the area.
Multiple explosions followed by heavy firing were reported in the area after the terrorists launched the attack, according to eyewitnesses, saying several buildings were also damaged in the attack.
The outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army has claimed responsibility for the attack. ■
