LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's counter-terrorism police have discovered 24 arms caches in the southern province of Helmand over the past one week, said a statement of the provincial police office released Thursday.

The seized weapons included seven AKM assault rifles, six U.S.-made M16 assault rifles, nine pistols, some machineguns and a huge quantity of ammunition.

The arms and ammunition were found in a series of operations in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah and the neighboring Grishk and Nad Ali districts over the past one week, said the statement.

The Afghan caretaker government, which took power in August 2021 in the wake of withdrawal of the U.S.-led troops from the Central Asian country, has recovered a huge amount of weapons including battle tanks from across Afghanistan.
