JAKARTA, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's inflation rate eased in January 2024 as consumer price index stood at 2.57 percent, compared to 2.61 percent recorded in December 2023, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) said on Thursday.
"In the past five years, January inflation figures have consistently been lower than December of the preceding year," stated acting head of BPS Amalia Widyasanti during a virtual press conference.
In an effort to curb inflation and maintain the value of local currency rupiah, Indonesia's central bank had increased its benchmark interest rate by 250 basis points between August 2022 and Oct. 19, 2023 to the current 6 percent. ■
