Nauru holds ceremony to celebrate 56th anniversary of independence

YAREN, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Nauru held a ceremony on Wednesday to celebrate the 56th anniversary of independence.

"Fifty-six years ago, our forefathers embarked on a journey of sovereignty, asserting our right to self-determination and independence," Nauruan President David Adeang said at the ceremony outside the government office building.

"Today, we honor the legacy by not only reflecting on our past but also looking forward to the future," he said.

During the ceremony, Adeang also laid a wreath at the base of a war memorial in front of the government building.

A representative of World War II survivors, who are affectionately known as "Young at Hearts," gave a speech telling her wartime story.

Kiribati President Taneti Maamau, President of the Federated States of Micronesia Wesley Simina and Deputy Prime Minister of Samoa Tuala Ponifasio were among foreign guests.

Representative of the Chinese government Luo Zhaohui, head of the China International Development Cooperation Agency, was also present at the ceremony.

People from all walks of life in Nauru, including those from government departments, civil society organizations, local businesses and tribes, held a parade during the ceremony.
