SUVA, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Fiji Police confirmed that the country has been used as a transit point and the methamphetamine found recently was destined for a foreign market.
The confirmation was made after 13 people related to the Nadi drug busts appeared in the Magistrates Court on Monday.
It is alleged that more than three tons of methamphetamine were transported to Legalega and over one ton to Maqalevu in Nadi, Fiji's third largest city.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime Mesake Waqa said the police action was made through joint efforts with their international law enforcement partners the Australian Federal Police and the Pacific Transnational Crime and Coordination Center.
Waqa said police also confirmed that the illicit substances arrived in Fiji in late December. The exchange of the shipment of methamphetamine was believed to be made outside of Fiji's Exclusive Economic Zone, and the packages were delivered via a barge.
He said the investigation revealed that the accused people stored the illicit substances in a private warehouse.
Those involved in the delivery and subsequent packing of the drugs have been charged. ■
