NEW DELHI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- India's wholesale price index (WPI) rose 0.73 percent year on year in December 2023, data released by the federal Ministry of Commerce and Industry said Monday.
The positive rate of inflation in December is primarily due to an increase in the prices of food, machinery and equipment, other manufacturing, other transport equipment and computer, electronics and optical products etc., the ministry said in a statement.
WPI for November was recorded as 0.26 percent.
WPI inflation, an indicator of prices in the wholesale market, rises or falls mainly due to steep increases or decreases in commodity prices globally.
WPI Food inflation increased from 4.69 percent in November to 5.39 percent in December in the South Asian country.
The Food Index consisting of food articles from the primary articles group and food products from the manufactured products group decreased from 183.1 in November to 179.9 in December.
The index for the manufactured products group decreased by 0.21 percent to 140.1 (provisional) in December from 140.4 (provisional) in the prior month.
The index for the primary articles group declined by 2.14 percent to 182.9 (provisional) in December from 186.9 (provisional) in the previous month.
The index for the fuel and power group declined by 0.71 percent to 154.2 (provisional) in December from 155.3 (provisional) in the previous month. ■
