TOKYO, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- A man was arrested on Saturday at JR Shinagawa Station in downtown Tokyo on suspicion of attempted murder after pushing a woman in her 60s from the platform onto the subway tracks.

Following the accident, which took place around 1:30 p.m. local time at platform 6 of JR Shinagawa Station, one of the busiest stations in the capital, the victim was transported to the hospital and reported no life-threatening injuries, local media reported.

The suspect, a 39-year-old man of unknown occupation from Osaka prefecture, was restrained by eyewitnesses on-site who turned him over to police officers arriving at the scene promptly.

He admitted to the allegations, stating that he had no prior acquaintance with the victim and committed the act because he wanted to stay inside a prison until he died, national news agency Kyodo reported, citing the police.

The female victim, who was waiting for a train on platform 6, was pushed from behind by the man when the accident happened. Witnesses managed to swiftly restrain the suspect and turned him over to the police, which prevented any further potential harm.
